Import contacts from CSV
The importer is built around Klaviyo's export format, which is close enough to most other platforms' exports to work without reshaping the file. The part that matters most is not the contacts — it is the people who asked not to hear from you.
Import your suppression list first
Before you import subscribers, import and suppress everyone who unsubscribed, bounced or complained on your old platform. Emailing those people on day one is both a legal problem and a deliverability one.
Export from your current platform
- Export subscribers with, at minimum: email, first name, last name, and consent or subscribe date.
- Export unsubscribes, hard bounces and spam complaints as a separate file.
- Export per-list membership separately if you intend to preserve your list structure.
Import
- Go to Segments in the dashboard and create the destination list.
- Open the list and use the CSV import.
- Map the columns — email is required; everything else is optional.
- Import, then check the member count against your source file before sending anything.
After the import
- Authenticate your sending domain under Settings → Email — SPF, DKIM and DMARC.
- Send your first campaign to your most engaged contacts only, at low volume.
- Watch bounces and complaints before increasing volume.
- Build out the rest of your lists over the following two to three weeks.
Sending domain reputation does not transfer between providers. A large first send from a cold domain is the single most common way a migration ends up in spam folders.
Frequently asked questions
- What columns are required?
- Email address. Names and custom fields are optional but make personalisation and segmentation possible later.
- Will duplicates create two contacts?
- Contacts are matched on email address. Check the resulting member count against your source file either way.
- Can I import engagement history?
- No platform imports another's open and click history in a usable form. Export your old reporting for the record and rebuild engagement segments over your first few sends.
- Does my bill go up with a bigger list?
- No. Pricing is flat per tenant rather than per stored contact.
